Product overview

TMT bars are reinforcement steel produced by quenching and tempering hot-rolled bar, which gives a hard outer layer and a ductile core.

They are bought by grade and standard, by diameter and by bundle. Mill test certificates are normally part of the deal.

Grades and standards

The grades most often specified in international trade. Name the standard as well as the grade.

01

Fe 500 / Fe 500D

IS 1786

“D” grades have tighter chemistry and higher elongation for ductility

02

Fe 550D

IS 1786

Higher strength for heavy structures

03

B500B / B500C

BS 4449

Common in UK-specified and GCC projects

04

Grade 60

ASTM A615

US-specified and many international projects

TMT Bars: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Fe 500 and Fe 500D?

Fe 500D has tighter limits on sulphur and phosphorus and higher minimum elongation, giving better ductility. Many seismic-zone projects specify D grades.

Can I order mixed diameters in one shipment?

Yes. Mixed sizes in one container or vessel are common; list the quantity per diameter.

Are TMT bars shipped in containers?

Yes. 12 m bars are often shipped in 40-foot containers or as break-bulk for large quantities.

Which certificates should I ask for?

A mill test certificate per heat is standard. Add third-party inspection if your project requires it.
